Painting Your Moral Canvas (PSU 317)

Presented by Beth Bailey, Assistant Director/ Program manager for Kansas State  University

This interactive session will get participants—particularly undergraduate, graduate students, and young professionals—in the "hot seat" in order to work through real moral dilemmas to see how they would manage difficult situations. More seasoned professionals can assist as mentors and advisors when the young professionals need help.
 

The Art of Supervision (PSU 313)

Presented by Thomas Lane, Assistant to the Vice President of Student Affairs and Director of Plaster Student Union   

Student Union/Activities professionals with supervisory responsibilities have the unique opportunity to not only positively impact their organization by developing supervisory competencies, but also have the rewarding  experience of helping provide a meaningful work experience for those they supervise. This session will explore Winston and Creamer’s “Synergistic   Supervision” model as well as provide an opportunity for participants to  reflect on their own supervisory style and the role supervision has played in shaping their professional experience.



Get Your Game Face On (PSU 314)

This session is designed to help infuse new ideas to Programming Boards.  This session will show them how they can successfully incorporate their   favorite board games for leadership training, communication and  teambuilding skills they will need to be an outstanding board.

 

 

Mentoring Student Managers (PSU 315)

Presented by Julie Hill, Assistant Director of Building Services and Student training, Missouri State University

Participants will be introduced to the processes used at Plaster Student   Union to hire student managers and our student manager training plans. Participants will see how we have combined training and mentoring of   student building managers with student area managers to create a  supportive team.

 

 

Painting with a Full Palette: Freedom of Expression in Student Union Operations and Activities (PSU 312)

Presented by Mike Jungers, Dean of Students, Missouri State University

The First Amendment and the rights that it affords are no more evident on a university campus than they are in student union facilities and student    activities programs and services. The most vibrant programs and services come about when student union staff and students are painting with a full palette. This program explores the many shades of freedom of expression, including freedom of speech, press, assembly, association, and belief, and how they color our day-to-day practice. Watch Dog organizations and court decisions help create contrasts between well-reasoned and questionable practices.

Do You Slam? You Should! (PSU 314)

Presented by Joe Hayes, Assistant Director of Missouri Student Unions, University of Missourio

The presenter will run through a power point presentation on how to run a campus Poetry Slam tournament. He will go over program publicity, day of operations, and how to get their teams to the regionals. Following the   presentation we'll watch a competition so the participants can get a feel for how an event runs.

 

 

Collaborative Arts: Partnership between Food      Service, Student Activities, and Building Operations  (PSU 313)

Presented by Miriam Huffman, Associate Director of Student Life, University ofspan Missouri– St. Louis     

Presenters will share with participants two campus programs sponsored jointly between Student Life, the Student Center Building Operations, and the campus food service provider.  These programs occur monthly and the objective of each is to merge food, facts, and fun in creative and engaging ways.  Wednesday Noon Live is a program that provides meals,  entertainment, and education centered around a new theme each month. A joint committee representing each of the departments plans and executes the events.  Green Eggs and Ham is a monthly morning program that  focuses on sustainable concepts including recycling and organic products.  Both programs occur in the main dining facility in the student union. We will share with participants our strategies for building these programs and  obstacles we had to overcome.

This session will give a brief overview about this assessment tool and will highlight how two very different universities have implemented it on their campuses with both their students and staff.

This roundtable discussion will feature a panel of auxiliary unit directors from housing, dining, performing arts, bookstores, and the campus union.  The panel will reflect on issues facing auxiliary units ranging from facilities management, fiscal management, human resources, technology, and student learning, to name a few.

Painting Your College Campus through Universal Design (PSU 315)

Presented by Kathryne Staeger-Wilson, Director of Disability Services, Missouri State University

Universal design is the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design. As design professionals take note that accessibility and usability features benefit all users, higher education professionals are beginning to think about how applying these same principles will create a more welcoming, diverse environment for everyone, including those with disabilities. This session will explore the principles of universal design and how they can be incorporated into learning environments, programming, and union construction projects. Learn how adopting universal design can increase diversity, improve campus climate and reduce potential costs  associated with retrofitting traditional designs. Paint a new picture on your

campus through this new paradigm shift in post-secondary education.

 

 

Juggling War: How to Balance Your Time and Stress (PSU 314)

The group will come together to play a juggling game. After the game is finished we will discuss what we can take away from that game in regards to stress or time management and how we can apply that to our given  positions.

I-Lead (Institute for Leadership Education and Development) is ACUIs  premier student leadership institute held each summer in Bloomington,  Indiana. Come to meet former student participants and facilitators to learn about the program and how you can get involved as a student or as a  professional.  I-Lead is an experience you will never forget!

 

Evaluating and Reworking a Student Employee    Program (PSU 31)

The Plaster Student Union Student Employee Vision Team was created to evaluate our past and current practices with student employees, to determine our vision of the ideal PSU student employee experience, and plan ways to make that vision a reality. Representatives of each department within the PSU met weekly for four months to complete the project.

Presented by Noah House, Student Affairs Graduate Assistant, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Video. Can it actually be interactive? Yes! This session provides an introductory crash course to how video can be utilized, even in an   interactive way, on a video-sharing site such as YouTube. The layperson, without a lot of fancy equipment or expensive software, can put together a quality video presentation highlighting practically any aspect of their  organization. Don’t be afraid of it!
