NJCAA Region 16 Sport Code
Men’s Basketball – Division I

  1. Selection of chair:  Region director selects chair.
  2. Selection of Coach of the Year:  The head coach of the post-season tournament champion is the Coach of the Year.
  3. Selection of Region competition site:  The higher seed hosts each round prior to the championship round with games starting at 7:00.  The championship final will be determined in a three game series between the winners of the semi-final games also to be played at 7:00.  The site rotation will be higher seed, lower seed, back to higher seed.
  4. Award policy:  First and second place team awards.  Fifteen individual awards are given to the championship and runner-up teams.  Ten individual plaques for All Region team.
  5. All Region selections:  Region director handles voting.  Coaches may nominate only their own players.  The top ten vote getters are selected.  Ties must be broken by highest vote ranking.
  6. All-American nominations:  The top five vote getters are nominated, providing the institution supplies required documentation.
  7. Code of Conduct:  As appears in the NJCAA Handbook.  Addendum: No cutting of the nets.
  8. Region Tournament:
    1. Seeding:  The highest seed hosts the contest, except for the championship games which are home-away-home.  Seeding is based on Division I region record.  Tie breakers – head to head competition between tied schools, record against the next highest seed team not in the tie breaker, record against the next highest seed team.  If record against all Region XVI teams are exhausted, the winning percentage against all Division I opponents outside of the region, then a coin toss.
    2. Officials:  The AD liaison is responsible for securing officials.
    3. Type of play:  Single elimination except the championship which is two out of three.
    4. Site selection:  The highest seed hosts each round prior to the championship, which is home-away-home.
    5. Type of ball:  NJCAA approved ball.
    6. Pre-tournament practice:  No pre-tournament practice at any neutral sites.
    7. Filming of opponent games:  Not permissible.
    8. Scouting information to outside institutions:  Scouting information to non-region institutions is discouraged.
    9. Financial arrangements:  After expenses of individual contests, one third to host, one third to visitor and one third to region.  A financial statement must be sent to the regional director by April 1.
    10. Film Exchange Policy:  Each region participant is required to provide any two requested films to each region opponent.
