Missouri Association of Colleges for Teacher Education

Resolution Regarding Dual Credit Education Courses

Dear Colleagues,

At the October 3rd, 2008 Business Meeting of the Missouri Association for Colleges of Teacher Education, a resolution on the offering of dual credit counting toward programs in teacher education was brought forward and approved.  The membership of MACTE, which is comprised of the majority of four year public and private universities or colleges offering approved teacher education programs, and the community colleges that also offer approved teacher preparation programs in our state, is highly supportive and interested in exploring new ways to recruit talented young people into the profession of teaching.  As President, I would like to establish an Ad Hoc committee to look at ways the organization can more readily connect with high school programs such as Future Teachers of America to create and promote experiences that would lead the best and brightest to the profession.  The task of the Ad Hoc committee will be to look at establishing elective credit options that could help high school students explore the numerous options available in the teaching profession in Missouri and the country.

I believe this resolution to be a positive position of MACTE and one that upholds the basic principles of a quality teacher education program.  The approach has the flexibility and mandate to work closely with high schools from around the state to energize and motivate young people who will be our teachers of tomorrow, and thus our future.  I would appreciate learning any comments about our resolution and how we can continue to address the critical needs for highly qualified teachers in Missouri.
