St. Louis Mounds, Downtown!

St. Louis had a major mound group on the north side of the present city. Not much is know about this ancient city, as it was destroyed before it could be scientifically studied.

The mounds, in downtown St. Louis, may have been connected to the Mississippian Period city at Cahokia. There was the "Big Mound" and at least 25 others. They were still there the first half of the 19th century. The burial chambers described copper, ivory and conch shells. The mounds were similar to Cahokia in that the location was on a high terrace next to the Mississippi River .
