MAS Publications

MAS Special Publication #8, Ozarks Chipped Stone Resources: A Guide to the Identification, Distribution, and Prehistoric Use of Cherts and Other Siliceous Raw Materials, by Jack H. Ray, is here!

This book is a product of more than 25 years of research on the various raw materials in the Ozarks that prehistoric Native Americans used to make chipped-stone tools. The purpose of the book is to provide a reference source or guide to the bewildering array of chipped-stone (knappable) resources available in the Ozarks. Divided into two parts, the book also has three appendices, including one with 28 color illustrations of the major types and varieties of cherts and other lithic resources that were used in prehistory. Another appendix is a glossary, containing definitions of geological and archaeological terms.

This publication is now available for purchase by contacting the MAS office. Purchase price for MAS members is $35; regular price is $45.

The Missouri Archaeologist is an annual publication by the Missouri Archaeological Society, Inc. with articles describing recent discoveries and their interpretation. Volume 1 of The Missouri Archaeologist appeared in 1935 and it has appeared regularly since that time, except for the years 1943-1948.

What about my county? Wonder what information we might have on the region where you live? For a table of MAS publications, sorted by county, click here. (This table may take a minute to download!) The table includes the MAS' four major publications (excluding the Quarterly): The Missouri Archaeologist, Research Series, Memoir Series, and Special Publications. It includes publications that are still in print and those that are out of print. Both publications lists (in print and out of print) are available at left. You may also download the above table as a PDF document.

The Society published the MAS Newsletter from 1946 until 1983. Beginning in 1984, the Newletter was replaced by the Missouri Archaeological Society Quarterly. The purpose of both the Newsletter and Quarterly is to provide information about local chapter activities, the annual meeting, book reviews, information about ongoing fieldwork, and brief reports of discoveries. (Back issues of the Quarterly are available for $2 each, and back issues of the Newsletter cost 50¢.)

Attention Bargain Hunters!

Entire sets of the Quarterly can be purchased for $25 plus $5 shipping and handling. The Quarterly has been in circulation since 1984, and with 4 issues a year, that's 90 issues for one very low price. For those of you who weren't members from "the early days" here's an opportunity to catch up on what has happened along the way.

Seven issues are out of print, so there will be gaps in the set (for instance, volume 3 is completely gone). A set will consist of all remaining issues up to (but not including) the current membership year.

If you'd like to order a set, you may do so with the order form on our Web site, or you may call the office to order over the phone with MasterCard or Visa.

The Missouri Archaeological Society has an excellent list of publications and accepts Visa and MasterCard for orders over $10. Members receive a 10% discount on Society publications (those not done by another publisher).

In past years, the MAS has published a Memoir Series and Research Series. These have been discontinued and only a few back issues are still available. Inquiries about publications should be sent to the MAS at the location listed in the page footer.
